B. What is GPS Tracking?
GPS tracking uses the same satellite technology as GPS navigation does, but for a very different purpose: to accurately and regularly track a person,
vehicle or wherever a tracking device has been placed.
GPS Tracking is good for tracking:
- People (Children, Elderly, Spouses, Employees)
- Vehicles
- Assets
With GPS tracking, you can now easily and accurately track where somebody goes in a car. You can also program the device to notify you (via text message or e-mail) when they stop off somewhere that you don’t approve of. The tracker can even tell you how fast they are driving the car and if they are exceeding the speed limit.
C. Two Types: Historical Loggers and Real-Time GPS Trackers
There are two types of GPS tracking devices:
1) Historical Loggers are GPS tracking devices that can be placed in a vehicle or in a backpack and which record the tracking data internally. Which means that the device is storing its tracking information inside the unit; it doesn’t send it out to the user. So, for example, to find out where your children have been driving, you need to retrieve the device from the car and connect it to a computer in order to download all the tracking information. The main advantage of this type of tracker is that once you purchase it there are no additional monthly fees (which Real-Time Trackers have). The real disadvantage is that you need to physically get the device every time you want to know where it’s been.
2) Real-Time Trackers are devices which look very similar to the historical loggers but which are internally distinct. The crucial difference between Real-Time Trackers and Historical Trackers is that Real-Time Trackers can actually track a location in real-time, meaning that one can view and monitor where the device has been in real-time on any computer(or smart phone) anywhere! All you need to do to find out where the device is currently located is to simply log-in to the tracker website with your username and password and you will be able to see (in real-time!) not only where the tracker is but where it has been. Along with the tracking, you can also monitor your battery life, set-up a Geo-Fence which will send an alert when the tracker enters or leaves a pre-determined area and print out a number of reports such as address, vehicle direction and speed report, all from the tracker website. It can even be programmed to send you a text message whenever the device is in motion.
D. Additional Information about GPS Tracking:
- There are often additional fees with real time trackers such as a onetime activation fee and monthly fees for the use of tracker. No long-term contracts are ever required, though, and the monthly fees are based on the frequency you would like the device to track: from every 5 seconds to every 15 minutes.
- ·Standard battery life is usually roughly 3-5 days of normal use. However, there are extended battery packs that will power the units for up to 30 days.
- ·Other GPS Tracking uses include: Asset tracking (for tracking expensive or fragile packages), baby stroller tracking, and elderly tracking (many of the devices come with belt clips to easily place the trackers on an elderly relative). They are also great safety devices for hiking & climbing expeditions.
- ·Actual Size: These devices are generally VERY small, often as small as a 9 volt battery.
